Citrus season launch

The South Australian citrus season was officially launched at the Adelaide Central Markets on Friday, May 30. Instigated by the South Australian Produce Market, through the Pick a Local, Pick SA campaign, the annual season launch provides an exceptional opportunity to promote our Riverland grown fruit to the public through the markets and media outlets. Alongside Citrus SA mascot, Squeezey, Adelaide celebrity chef Callum Hann was on hand to showcase citrus inspired recipes. Thanks to Penny Reidy from the SA Produce Market for another successful event.

Call for Applications – Rex Andrew Trust Fund
The South Australian Citrus Improvement Society (SACIS) is inviting applications for projects that could be supported by the MCGCA Rex Andrew Trust Fund.

The SACIS committee administers the Trust, which was established using remaining funds from the former Murray Citrus Growers Co-operative Association (MCGCA) when it was dissolved and Citrus Growers of South Australia was formed. The fund was named in honour of Rex Andrew, who served as president of the MCGCA for more than 20 years.

Each year, funding is available from the interest earned on the invested capital. Projects must deliver benefit to the South Australian or broader Australian citrus industry.

Closing date for applications will be two months from the funding announcement and should be sent to PO Box 52, Berri or to the secretary, Anne Stepien, email stepmark@live.com.au

June production notes

Later winter GA spray: The main objective for this spray is to regulate flowering. This should be considered, particularly if there has been a light fruit set.

Imperial GA Spray: This spray can be considered on selected patches if you need to prolong your harvest window. Benefits of this application can also reduce puffiness and water marks, if there is wet weather.

Winter foliar Urea Spray: This spray can assist in producing healthy bud initiation, especially if following a heavy crop set.

Frost Control Measures: It is important to identify frost prone areas and implement measures to prevent, detect and reduce frost risks.

Irrigation Maintenance: With a reduced water demand this time of year, this is an ideal time to do irrigation maintenance and flushing of irrigation lines.

Crop estimates and size: It is important to regularly update your fruit size and yield estimates and communicate this with your packer. This will assist with marketing strategies in particularly the export markets.
